our counselors
Ask the kids what they like best about Adventure Camps, and many of them will say the counselors. When it comes to choosing his staff, Rory is highly selective. While most of our staff is made up of former Adventure Campers, on rare occasions we meet someone of exceptional talent and character that will come aboard. Each counselor must genuinely love being among children, posses a strong sense of responsibility, and have an honest and direct personal style. It's those qualities, plus an endless supply of energy, an enthusiasm for life, and a great sense of humor, that we look for when hiring an Adventure Camps counselor.
Before each new season begins, our counselors participate in special training sessions. During this time, they learn what it means to be an Adventure Camps counselor. Sure, we review safety and logistics, but just as important, we discuss the critical need to treat each child with personal attention and respect. We also challenge for our staff to find ways to make each day exciting and new for each and everyone of our campers and we discuss various ways they can actively engage the kids to achieve that goal.
As the man behind the structure and inspiration of Adventure Camps, owner Rory Judge personally produces and directs all the camps, including summer, school year, and vacation sessions.
He came to Adventure Camps in 1978 after moving to the west coast from Boston. Since that time, thousands of kids have enrolled in Adventure Camps, and Rory has been privileged to welcome them all into his Adventure Camp family. After all these years, it's still a thrill for Rory when so many of his campers come back later as counselors. It's also particularly rewarding that some are already starting to send their own children to Camp, making the experience a tradition in the lives of many Bay Area families.
Rory's early years and travels gave him an appreciation for the importance of creativity, spontaneity, and playfulness in life and in shaping children's experiences. In more than 33 years at Adventure Camps, Rory has fostered that creativity and directed it towards making Adventure Camps a very special place for children.

RORY'S PROFILE
Lauren Brown has always loved Adventure Camps unique spark, thrilling explorations, and quite fantastic lasting memories. Camp has been a very important part of her life and she would love to show many more curious children the fun they could soon uncover. "I have been around Adventure Camps for the past 20 years. I started by helping my mother drop off and pick up my older brother when
I was too young to attend camp. A couple years later I started and to this day I have never missed a summer at Adventure Camps. I have the unique eye as I have been a sibling of a camper, camper, helper, assistant, junior counselor, and counselor. I love that the traditions I enjoyed so much as a child are still very much apart of camp today."
Schools Attended: Temple Emanu-El Pre School, Rivendell Elementary School, Live Oak Middle School, Gateway High School, University of California, Santa Cruz (BA in Art).
